Safety Companions and PSAs

  • Checks-in with nurse in charge of patient prior to entering patient’s room.
  • Knocks on patient’s door and introduces themselves before entering patient’s room.
  • Provides support to patients who may be at high risk for injury due to various medical conditions.
  • Remains at bedside/in the room of assigned patient at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
  • Monitors the patient's verbalizations and immediately informs the nurse if the patient expresses any idea or intention to hurt self/others or leave without physician's permission.
  • Maintains a quarterly hour log of patient status during the assigned service time.
  • Assists in calming and/or reorienting patient in cases of agitation or confusion.
  • Removes visible hazards and/or broken equipment from immediate environment and reports as appropriate.
  • Assists with keeping patient's room clean, safe and orderly.
  • Refrains from engaging patient in discussions about patient condition and refers the patient to the nurse or physician to answer any questions regarding care.
  • Reports directly to the nurse in charge of the patient while in patient care area. The primary direct report will be to the MHS Site Manager.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the hospital as well as the proper release of information.
  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
  • Companion maintains CPR certification and is trained on hospital “Code” procedures.
  • Completes MHS Safety Companion training.
  • 24/7 on-call service delivery:
    • During the regular service hours the transition time from Ambassador/Patient Transporter to Safety Companion will be no greater than 30 minutes.
    • All other times (After Hours) MHS will provide the Safety Companion within two hours of receiving the call for service.
